As the fate of environmental protection had worked out to this point, the major opposition was between corporate business enterprise, with all its claims about providing jobs and stimulating the economy, and the growing environmental movement. The attitude of American business to the natural environment had been until this point one of benevolent exclusion. The corporate leaders loved nature, and encouraged their sons into the Cub Scouts and their wives into the Garden Clubs, but business was business, and the wildflowers don’t pay the rent. They had the proof from Adam Smith that the best thing for the greatest number in the long run was to let business pursue profit wherever it could find profit, with no interference from the State. Most of the battles had been won by business, in the past; recently, environmentalists had won more of them and now the future looked dangerous. A new move began circulating through the business system, one that suggested that profits could be made in alliance with the environment. At first, there were only a few pioneers, but slowly a new vision of American business emerged.
